Finding the best glass filter media for a pool sand filter isn't quite as easy as shopping for traditional silica sand. There simply aren't as many readily available options, particularly for above-ground pool owners shopping in the US.
HARSCO BrightLine is one of the few that stands out.
It's a 100% recycled-glass filter media designed to replace traditional sand inside a sand filter. Instead of using the same amount pound for pound, one 40 lb bag of BrightLine is designed to replace approximately 50 lb of conventional filter sand.
That makes it lighter to load into the filter, but it's still very different from the lightweight fiber balls we've looked at elsewhere on Above Ground Splash.
The bigger question is whether the extra cost of glass media gives you enough benefit over ordinary pool filter sand to justify making the switch.
Quick Verdict
HARSCO BrightLine Filter Glass is one of the more convincing glass-media options we've found for above-ground pool sand filters.
We like that it's a properly documented filtration product rather than an anonymous bag of crushed glass. BrightLine publishes its grain size, sand-to-glass conversion, installation guidance and compatibility information, and the product is made from 100% recycled glass.
The manufacturer also claims considerably finer filtration and a longer service life than conventional sand. Those claims are appealing, but we'd treat the exact performance figures as manufacturer claims rather than guaranteed results.
Where BrightLine makes the most sense is for someone who already wants to move from silica sand to glass and is happy to pay more upfront for a media that requires less material by weight.
Best for: Sand-filter owners who specifically want a granular glass alternative to traditional silica sand.
Skip it if: Your priority is simply getting the lowest-cost, easiest-to-source filter media. Traditional pool filter sand still wins there.
Specs at a Glance
The key figure here is the 20% reduction in media by weight. You shouldn't simply replace 100 lb of sand with 100 lb of BrightLine glass. BrightLine's guidance calls for around 80 lb of glass where a filter would normally require 100 lb of sand.
What Is HARSCO BrightLine Filter Glass?
There is a little potential for confusion around the product name.
The current Amazon listing calls it HARSCO Metals & Minerals Filter Glass, while the bag itself carries the BrightLine Filter Media branding.
For the purposes of this review, we're talking about that same 40 lb BrightLine recycled-glass filtration media.
Unlike filter balls, which replace granular media with lightweight fiber, BrightLine still behaves much more like conventional sand inside the filter. It's a granular material that forms the filtration bed and is cleaned through the filter's normal backwashing process.
The difference is the material itself.
BrightLine uses processed recycled glass rather than silica sand and is sized specifically for filtration use. Its published effective size is 0.45–0.60 mm, placing it in the general size range you'd expect from media designed to replace pool filter sand.

What We Like About BrightLine Filter Glass
You Need Less Media Than Traditional Sand
This is one of the easiest benefits to understand.
BrightLine says its glass media requires approximately 20% less material by weight than traditional filter sand.
A filter requiring 50 lb of sand therefore needs around one 40 lb bag of BrightLine.
A 100 lb sand filter would use around 80 lb of BrightLine.
That difference becomes more noticeable as filter size increases. Loading 120 lb of glass into a filter instead of 150 lb of sand still isn't exactly light work, but it's a worthwhile reduction.
It's Made From Recycled Glass
BrightLine is made from 100% recycled glass, giving it a very different material profile from conventional silica pool sand.
We wouldn't choose a filter media purely because the packaging calls it environmentally friendly, but making use of recycled material is still a legitimate advantage.
More important from a pool owner's point of view is that the glass is processed and sized specifically as filtration media rather than simply being generic crushed glass.
The Product Is Properly Documented
This is one of the bigger reasons we're comfortable recommending BrightLine.
There are plenty of filtration products online with big performance claims and very little technical information behind them.

This is much easier than trying to guess based on the physical size of the filter tank.
For example, if your filter normally takes 150 lb of pool filter sand, BrightLine's guidance calls for approximately 120 lb of glass media — three 40 lb bags.
Always start with the specified sand capacity for your particular filter rather than estimating from tank diameter alone.
Does BrightLine Really Filter Down to 5 Microns?
This is one claim we want to handle carefully.
BrightLine's product literature states that the glass media can filter particles down to around 5 microns and describes that as considerably finer filtration than conventional pool filter sand.
That's impressive if achieved in real-world use.
However, we haven't found independent testing that gives us enough confidence to present “5-micron filtration” as a guaranteed result for every pool and filter.
So our position is straightforward:
BrightLine claims filtration down to 5 microns. We regard that as a manufacturer performance claim rather than an independently established specification.
That doesn't make the product a bad choice.
The documented media sizing, recycled-glass construction, reduced quantity requirement and sand-filter compatibility already give BrightLine a legitimate reason to exist without relying entirely on an eye-catching micron number.
Is HARSCO One of the Best Glass Filter Media Options?
If you're searching for the best pool filter glass media, HARSCO BrightLine is one of the strongest options we've found that US above-ground pool owners can realistically buy.
A big part of that conclusion is practical.
There aren't nearly as many established glass-media products readily available in the US as there are traditional sands or filter balls. Some glass products are difficult to source, while others appear inconsistently from one retailer to the next.
BrightLine has a much clearer product identity, established pool-industry distribution and detailed technical guidance.
That doesn't mean we're declaring it universally better than every glass filtration product on the market.
It means that if you specifically want to replace pool filter sand with glass media, BrightLine is one of the options we'd be comfortable putting on our shortlist.

For most buyers, this is the real decision.
The important thing is that glass doesn't completely change how you operate your filter.

What to Know Before Switching From Sand to BrightLine
It Costs More Upfront
Traditional pool filter sand is difficult to beat on initial price.
BrightLine normally costs more per bag, and although you need approximately 20% less media, that doesn't necessarily make the initial fill cheaper.
The argument for glass is therefore less about getting the cheapest filter fill today and more about whether you value the reduced media requirement and BrightLine's claimed filtration and longevity advantages.
A 40 lb Bag Is Still Heavy
BrightLine is lighter relative to the amount of sand it replaces, but don't confuse it with pool filter balls.
A 40 lb bag still weighs 40 lb.
If your main reason for moving away from sand is that you physically don't want to handle heavy filter media anymore, glass doesn't completely solve that problem.

Does BrightLine Need a Pea-Gravel Base?
Not necessarily.
BrightLine's guidance says it does not require a pea-gravel base on its own.
However, if your filter manufacturer recommends using pea gravel above the laterals, you should continue to follow that requirement.
The purpose of the gravel is to protect the area around the filter laterals and help prevent finer media from packing tightly around them.
So this isn't something we'd decide based solely on the BrightLine bag.
Your filter manufacturer's installation requirements take priority.
How to Switch From Pool Filter Sand to BrightLine Glass
The basic process is similar to replacing old sand with new sand, but the amount of media changes.
First, switch off and isolate the filtration system according to your filter instructions, then remove the existing media from the tank.
With the tank empty, it's a good opportunity to inspect the laterals and internal components for damage before covering them again.
If your filter manufacturer requires a pea-gravel base, install that first.
You can then add the correct amount of BrightLine based on the filter's normal sand capacity. Remember that BrightLine uses around 80% of the normal sand weight.
Once the filter is reassembled, BrightLine says an initial backwash isn't strictly required but is highly recommended.
We would do it.
It gives the new media an initial rinse and lets you confirm that the system is operating normally before returning the multiport valve to its filtration setting.
Always follow the instructions supplied with your particular filter for depressurizing, opening, refilling and restarting the system.
What Is BrightLine Like to Maintain?
One advantage of switching from sand to glass is that you don't need to learn an entirely different maintenance routine.
BrightLine remains inside the sand-filter tank and is cleaned through backwashing.
Rather than backwashing on an arbitrary weekly schedule, use the pressure guidance supplied with your filter. A noticeable increase above the clean starting pressure is normally the more useful indicator that the media bed needs cleaning.
BrightLine claims its glass structure allows more efficient backwashing and can reduce the amount of water lost during cleaning.
Again, we'd regard the exact savings as a manufacturer claim rather than promising a specific percentage.
The important practical point is simpler: you can continue using the normal backwash-and-rinse workflow associated with a sand filter.
What About BrightLine's Longer-Life Claim?
BrightLine also says its glass media can last approximately three times longer than traditional filter sand.
That's potentially important because it would help offset the higher upfront price.
But service life is difficult to guarantee.
How long any filter media lasts depends on water chemistry, debris load, filter sizing, backwashing habits and how heavily the pool is used.
So we wouldn't buy BrightLine on the assumption that you're guaranteed a specific number of seasons.

We'd skip BrightLine if your main priority is low initial cost.
Traditional pool filter sand is cheaper and much easier to find.
