Recall Overview
On July 21, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of approximately 5 million above-ground pools that are 48 inches or taller and use external compression straps. This action comes after reports of nine tragic drowning deaths of children aged 22 months to 3 years between 2007 and 2022. The compression straps, which wrap around the pool’s vertical support legs, create a foothold enabling children to climb into the pool even when ladders are removed.
Hazard Description:
Compression Strap Footholds: The recalled pools employ straps on the outside of the support poles to maintain structural integrity. These straps form footholds that small children have used to enter pools unsupervised, resulting in drowning incidents.
Geographic Spread: Reported fatalities occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri.
Affected Brands & Models:
Pools included in the recall fall into three manufacturer groups. All models are 48 inches or taller:
Bestway & Coleman (sold 2008–2024)
Power Steel Metal Frame Pools
Prism Frame Pools
Steel Pro Ultra Frame Pools
Ultra XTR Frame Pools
Summer Waves (2015–2025)
Summer Escapes (2006–2015)
Coleman Power Steel (various years)
Funsicle (2023–2025)
Sand‑n‑Sun (2008–2011)
Blue Wave (2014–2025)

Intex Recreation Corp.
Models sold 2002–2012 (all standard Metal Frame, Ultra Frame, Prism Frame families)
266 additional pools sold exclusively via Intexcorp.com and Walmart (2024–2025)

Polygroup North America, Inc. (sold 2006–2025)
Various above‑ground pool lines under brand names such as Summer Waves and others.

Why Were These Pools Recalled?
The CPSC determined that the external compression straps:
Create unintended footholds, allowing children to climb in even when the pool ladder is removed
Defeat typical safety measures, increasing drowning risk
Have been directly linked to nine child fatalities and additional near‑drowning incidents.
Recommended Consumer Actions:
Immediately Restrict Access
Keep children away from the pool area.
Remove ladders or block pool access entirely until repaired.
Request a Free Repair Kit
Bestway: Call 844‑593‑4003 (8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET Mon–Fri) or visit BW Recall Support.

Install the Repair Kit
The kit replaces the hazardous strap with a ground‑level rope that attaches at each support pole.
After installation, cut and remove the original compression strap.
Alternative Interim Measure
If you cannot immediately install the repair kit, drain the pool until it can be made safe.
How to Check If Your Pool Is Recalled:
Locate the Model Information
Look on the outside of the pool liner for the brand name and model number.
Compare Against Recalled Lists
Use the model names listed above. If yours matches any of the Bestway, Coleman, Intex, or Polygroup lines described, it’s subject to the recall.
View Strap Configuration
If your pool has a visible external strap running over the support legs (rather than hidden behind them), it is part of this recall.
For detailed photos of recalled vs. non‑recalled strap setups, visit the CPSC’s examples section.
