Intex SX1500 Sand Filter Pump Review: Is It Big Enough?

The Intex SX1500 sits at the smaller end of Intex’s sand-filter range, but that doesn’t mean it is only useful for tiny pools.
Its 10-inch filter tank holds 26 lb of No. 20 silica sand, and you get the same basic sand-filter ownership advantages as the larger Intex systems: a six-function valve, pressure gauge, built-in timer, strainer basket and the ability to clean the filter by backwashing rather than removing a cartridge.
The number we care about most, though, is 1,050 GPH.
That is the SX1500’s system flow rate, and it tells us much more about realistic pool sizing than the 1,500 GPH used in the product name and current retail marketing.
For us, the SX1500 makes the most sense on small to medium above-ground pools, typically up to around 15–16 ft round depending on wall height and actual water volume.
Once you’re moving into a typical 18 ft round pool, we’d rather have more filtration headroom.

The Intex SX1500 is one of the more sensible ways to move from cartridge filtration to sand without buying a much larger pump than a smaller above-ground pool actually needs.
Its 1,050 GPH system flow is enough for the pool sizes we’d realistically pair it with, while the 10-inch sand tank gives you a different maintenance routine from an Intex C-series cartridge pump.
Instead of regularly removing and rinsing a pleated cartridge, you monitor the pressure and backwash the filter when the sand bed becomes restricted.

Best for: Small to medium above-ground pools where you want the easier routine cleaning of a sand filter without stepping up to a large filtration system.

Why We Size the SX1500 From 1,050 GPH — Not the Headline Number
This is one of the most important things to understand about the SX1500.
The current Amazon listing markets it as a 1,500 GPH pump, and Intex also uses “SX1500” and 1,500 GPH in the main product description.
But further down Intex’s own current product page, the technical data lists the pump flow as 1,200 GPH.
What both sources consistently agree on is:
System flow: 1,050 GPH.
So rather than getting distracted by whether the unloaded pump figure is 1,200 or 1,500 GPH, we’d size the pool from the number that reflects water moving through the complete filtration system.
That is 1,050 GPH.
It is the same principle we use with the Intex cartridge pumps: the headline number may catch your eye, but system flow is the more useful buying number.
What Size Above-Ground Pool Is the SX1500 Actually Good For?
Intex gives the SX1500 a manufacturer range of 2,800 to 8,400 gallons.
We wouldn’t use the full 8,400-gallon figure as our buying recommendation.
At 1,050 GPH system flow, the theoretical turnover looks like this:
At 4,000 gallons, the SX1500 works out at roughly 3.8 hours per theoretical turnover; at 5,000 gallons, about 4.8 hours; and at 6,300 gallons, you're at our six-hour ceiling.
These are theoretical volume-to-flow calculations rather than a guarantee that every gallon has literally passed through the filter once. Pool water continually mixes, and real-world flow can also fall as debris builds in the filter.
Our preference is still to keep theoretical turnover within six hours at the absolute maximum, with roughly three to five hours giving us more breathing room where practical.
That is why we’d generally pair the SX1500 with a typical round above-ground pool up to around 15–16 ft, depending on wall height and actual gallons.
What about an 18 ft pool?
An 18 ft pool is where we’d start looking harder at the actual water capacity.
A relatively shallow or lower-volume setup may still land close to the SX1500’s six-hour turnover range.
But if we were buying a new filtration system for a typical 18 ft round pool, we’d normally step up rather than start close to the smaller pump’s practical ceiling.

Why Our Recommendation Is Lower Than Intex’s 8,400-Gallon Maximum
There’s nothing unusual about a manufacturer listing a larger compatible pool capacity than we’d recommend when buying from scratch.
At 8,400 gallons, the SX1500 needs around eight hours for one theoretical turnover at its 1,050 GPH system-flow rating.
That may technically meet Intex’s intended operating envelope, but it leaves much less headroom when the filter starts collecting dirt, the pool gets heavy use or you are trying to recover cloudy water.
We’d rather have the SX1500 working comfortably on a smaller pool than choose it right at the upper end of its stated capacity.
That is why “compatible with” and “what we’d buy for” are not always the same thing.
SX1500 vs C1500: Sand or Cartridge?
The SX1500 sits in roughly the same small-to-medium pool conversation as the Intex C1500, but the ownership experience is very different.
We wouldn’t say sand is automatically better than cartridge filtration.
The real difference is maintenance.
With the C1500, you open the housing, remove the Type A cartridge and rinse it.
With the SX1500, the media stays in the tank and routine cleaning is handled through the Backwash and Rinse settings on the control valve.
If you dislike handling dirty cartridges, that may be enough to push you toward the SX1500.
If you prefer being able to physically remove and inspect the filter media, the C1500 may suit you better.

What Filter Media Does the SX1500 Use?
The standard choice is 26 lb of No. 20 silica filter sand.
Intex also lists 18.5 lb of glass media for the 10-inch SX1500 tank.
If you simply want the most straightforward setup, we’d start with proper pool filter sand. It is widely available, inexpensive and exactly what this type of filter was designed around.

What about filter balls?
The current SX1500 retail graphic also lists 0.77 lb of fiber balls as a media option.
However, Intex’s current main technical specification page explicitly lists sand and glass rather than fiber balls.
So if we were using balls, we’d verify the current instructions supplied with the particular media before filling the tank.
For us, sand remains the default recommendation unless there is a specific reason you want the lighter alternative.
The Six-Function Valve Is What Makes Sand Filtration Convenient

The valve gives you six settings:
Filter — normal pool filtration
Backwash — reverses flow through the media to flush out trapped dirt
Rinse — resettles the media after backwashing
Recirculate — moves water without filtering it
Drain — sends water out through the waste line
Closed — stops flow through the valve
This is the main reason sand-filter maintenance feels different from cartridge ownership.
Instead of opening the filter housing every time the media becomes dirty, most routine cleaning happens by changing valve positions.
One important habit: always switch the pump off before changing the valve position.
What Is This Sand Filter Pump Like to Maintain?
The SX1500 isn’t maintenance-free, but the routine is fairly simple once you understand the pressure gauge.
Rather than automatically backwashing every week or every two weeks, we’d pay attention to filter pressure and water flow.
Intex’s operating guidance tells owners to note the initial clean-filter pressure and backwash when the gauge moves into the higher-pressure/yellow area as dirt accumulates and flow falls.
That makes more sense than using a fixed calendar because two pools can load the same filter very differently.
A pool surrounded by trees or dealing with an algae cleanup may need attention much sooner than a lightly used pool with little debris.

The strainer basket also needs checking periodically because larger debris caught before the pump can reduce flow if the basket becomes packed.
As for the filter media itself, Intex markets sand as capable of lasting up to around five years under normal use.
We wouldn’t treat five years as an automatic replacement date, though. Media condition, channeling, poor filtration and declining performance matter more than simply counting seasons.
The Built-In Timer Is Genuinely Useful
The SX1500 includes a 24-hour automatic timer with 2–12 hour preset operating cycles.
That means you don’t need to manually switch the pump on and off every day.
How many hours you should actually run it depends on your pool volume, swimmer load, weather and water condition.
For the pool sizes we’d pair with the SX1500, we’d use the turnover calculation as a starting point rather than simply setting it to the maximum 12 hours every day.
If a 4,000-gallon pool theoretically turns over in roughly 3.8 hours, for example, that gives you much more flexibility than an 8,000-gallon pool running the same filter.
What Comes With the SX1500?
The current SX1500 includes:
the 10-inch sand filter and pump;
two 1.5-inch (38 mm) connector hoses;
HydroAeration inlet fitting;
six-function valve and pressure gauge;
timer and strainer basket.
Filter media is not included.
Intex also states that the plunger valves and 1.5-inch outlet fittings are not included, so check what is already fitted to your pool before assuming everything required for the installation is in the box.

The unit itself is fairly compact at roughly 15 × 12.5 × 20.5 inches, which is another reason it suits smaller above-ground setups where a much larger filter would take up unnecessary space.
What Does HydroAeration Add?
The included HydroAeration fitting mixes air into the return flow as water enters the pool.
Intex promotes it for improved circulation and aeration.
We see it as a useful extra rather than a reason to choose the SX1500.
The important buying decisions are still:
Is the 1,050 GPH system flow enough?
Do you want sand-filter maintenance?
Does the plumbing fit your pool?

It also makes sense for someone who prefers the familiar sand-filter routine of watching the pressure gauge and backwashing when necessary.
For that type of owner, the SX1500 gives you the main benefits of sand filtration without the footprint or price of a much larger system.
Who Should Skip It?
We’d skip the SX1500 if you are buying specifically for a typical 18 ft round pool or larger.
Some lower-volume 18 ft setups may still fall close to its theoretical capacity, but we’d rather have extra circulation and filtration headroom when buying new.
We’d also skip it if you actively prefer cartridge filtration.
Sand filters aren’t automatically better — they simply trade cartridge rinsing for backwashing and eventual media maintenance.
And if your pool currently uses smaller hoses or different fittings, check the plumbing before ordering. The SX1500 is built around 1.5-inch connections.
Our Verdict
The Intex SX1500 is a strong small-to-medium sand filter pump, but we’d buy it for the 1,050 GPH system flow and convenient backwashing — not because the name says 1,500 GPH.
For a typical pool up to around 15–16 ft round, it offers a useful middle ground between small cartridge pumps and the much larger Intex sand-filter systems.
The 26 lb sand tank, pressure gauge, six-function valve, timer and strainer basket make routine ownership straightforward once the system is set up correctly.
Where we’d be cautious is the 8,400-gallon manufacturer maximum.
At that volume, the theoretical turnover is around eight hours, which is considerably less headroom than we want when buying a filtration system from scratch.
Our recommendation: A very good compact sand-filter option for smaller and medium above-ground pools. For a typical 18 ft pool, we’d move up rather than stretch it.
