Hayward Pool Filter Review: Is the ProSeries 18-Inch Worth the Price?


This review covers the Hayward ProSeries W3S180T92S, an 18-inch Hayward pool filter system paired with a 1 HP PowerFlo Matrix pump.
It's a very different proposition from the compact Intex sand filters we've been looking at.
The filter alone takes 150 lb of sand, the tank measures 18 inches across, and the complete system includes Hayward's 7-position Vari-Flo valve, pressure gauge, PowerFlo Matrix pump, equipment base and 1.5-inch hose package.
But there's one specification we need to deal with carefully.
The ProSeries 18-inch filter has a 35 GPM design-flow rating.
That works out at 2,100 gallons per hour, but unlike Intex's published “system flow” figures, 35 GPM is not a promise that your installed pool will actually circulate at 35 GPM.
Actual flow changes with plumbing length, fittings, hose diameter, elevation and system resistance.
That's why we wouldn't size this system from the 1 HP label or a broad gallon-capacity claim alone.
Quick Verdict
The Hayward ProSeries 18-inch is a much more substantial sand-filter system than the smaller Intex models, but we'd buy it for its large media bed, serviceable design and PowerFlo Matrix pump — not because it necessarily moves more water than every cheaper alternative.
The 18-inch tank holds 150 lb of filter sand, more than double the 77 lb used by the Intex SX2800, while the included 1 HP PowerFlo Matrix pump gives you a matched Hayward filtration system rather than a small all-in-one unit.
Its 35 GPM filter-design rating places it in roughly the same raw flow class as the SX2800, though Hayward does not publish a single installed system-flow number for this combination.
For us, the ProSeries 18-inch makes the most sense on larger above-ground pools, particularly around the 18–21 ft range.
A 24 ft pool can also fall within the numbers, but that's where we'd stop using pool diameter alone and check the actual gallon capacity carefully.
Best for: Larger permanently installed above-ground pools where you want a substantial sand bed, Hayward pump/filter combination and straightforward backwashing.
Skip it if: You have a smaller pool, want a built-in filtration timer, or you're choosing mainly on price — because there are considerably cheaper sand-filter systems with similar nominal flow capacity.
Hayward ProSeries 18-Inch Specs at a Glance
Hayward's ProSeries documentation gives the S180T a 150 lb media capacity and 50 PSI maximum working pressure, while current product data lists a 1.75 sq ft filtration area and 35 GPM design flow.

35 GPM Is a Design Rating — Not Guaranteed Pool Flow
With the Intex SX2800, the pump is rated at 2,800 GPH, while Intex publishes an installed system flow of 2,150 GPH.
With the ProSeries, Hayward gives the 18-inch filter a 35 GPM design flow, equivalent to 2,100 GPH.
But the amount of water actually moving around your pool depends on the pump curve and total dynamic head of the installed system.
Longer plumbing, restrictive fittings, extra equipment and higher resistance can all reduce real flow.
What Size Above-Ground Pool Is This Hayward Pool Filter Best For?
At the full 35 GPM design rating, theoretical turnover looks like this:
At 8,000 gallons, 35 GPM works out at roughly 3.8 hours per theoretical turnover. At 10,000 gallons, it's around 4.8 hours. At 12,600 gallons, you're at our six-hour ceiling.
The published 16,800-gallon eight-hour turnover figure follows exactly the same calculation.
The catch is that these calculations assume the system is actually delivering the filter's full 35 GPM design rate.
That is why we'd be particularly comfortable with the ProSeries on the sort of water volumes normally associated with 18–21 ft round above-ground pools.
What about a 24 ft pool?
A typical 24 ft pool is where we'd look at the gallons rather than saying yes simply because the diameter is 24 ft.
If the pool holds around 12,000–12,500 gallons, the theoretical calculation still fits inside six hours at 35 GPM.
But there isn't much spare room.
And because 35 GPM is a filter design rating rather than a guaranteed installed system flow, we wouldn't call this a blanket “up to 24 ft” recommendation.

For a typical 24 ft pool, we'd want the plumbing and installation to let this system operate comfortably rather than buying it right at the edge of a calculation.
Hayward ProSeries vs Intex: What Are You Getting for the Extra Cost?
This is the question we'd want answered before spending the money.
At the time of this review, the Hayward ProSeries is around $600 more than the Intex SX2800 and more than three times the price of the larger SX3000.
So is the Hayward three times better?
No — not in terms of water circulation or basic sand filtration.
The SX2800 publishes 2,150 GPH system flow, while the 18-inch Hayward filter has a 35 GPM design-flow rating, equivalent to 2,100 GPH. The larger SX3000 publishes 2,450 GPH system flow.
Those aren't perfectly equivalent measurements — Hayward is giving us filter design flow while Intex publishes installed system flow — but they make one thing clear:
You're not paying an extra $600 because the Hayward moves three times as much water.
What you're paying for is a different class of filtration equipment.
Where the Hayward earns some of its premium
The strongest argument for the ProSeries is long-term equipment ownership.
The 18-inch tank holds 150 lb of sand, and Hayward treats the filter, multiport valve and PowerFlo Matrix pump as serviceable equipment with individual replacement components available for the major assemblies.
If you're building a permanent equipment pad and expect to keep the system for years, being able to service individual components instead of replacing the whole setup has real value.
The larger filter bed is also substantial. It gives the ProSeries considerably more filter media than the SX2800 and still more than the SX3000.
But we wouldn't turn that into a claim that the Hayward automatically produces dramatically cleaner water. All three are legitimate sand-filter systems when correctly sized, maintained and operated.
Where the Intex makes the Hayward difficult to justify
If your main goal is simply:
“I need a good sand filter that will keep my above-ground pool clean.”
the Intex systems are extremely difficult to ignore.
The SX2800 gives you 2,150 GPH published system flow, a 77 lb sand bed, six-function valve, pressure gauge and built-in timer for a fraction of the Hayward's price. The SX3000 increases that to 2,450 GPH system flow and 120 lb of sand while still costing dramatically less.
For a typical above-ground pool owner who isn't specifically looking for a Hayward-style equipment platform, we don't think the ProSeries offers three times the practical filtration value simply because it costs more than three times as much.
In that situation, we'd save the money and buy the correctly sized Intex.
Who should actually pay more for the Hayward?
We'd justify the ProSeries premium if you:
want a more traditional, separately serviceable pump-and-filter platform;
specifically value the 150 lb media bed;
intend the filtration system to be a long-term part of a permanent above-ground pool setup;
prefer the Hayward PowerFlo Matrix / ProSeries ecosystem;
value the seven-position valve and dedicated winterizing setup;
or already use Hayward equipment and want to stay within that platform.
We'd choose the SX2800 or SX3000 instead if your priority is getting the filtration capacity your pool actually needs for the lowest sensible purchase price.
For most typical above-ground pool owners, that makes the Intex the stronger value proposition.

What About the Intex SX3000?
The Intex SX3000 is also worth considering if you're shopping at the larger end of the Intex sand-filter range.

It increases published system flow to 2,450 GPH, uses a 16-inch tank and holds 120 lb of sand, putting it closer to the ProSeries in physical filter capacity than the SX2800.
The difference is where we'd use them.
The SX3000 makes the most sense when pool volume is pushing beyond what we'd comfortably pair with the SX2800 — particularly as you move toward a typical 27 ft round pool.
The 18-inch Hayward ProSeries isn't automatically the better choice just because it costs more. Its appeal is the 150 lb filter bed, PowerFlo Matrix pump and more substantial Hayward platform, while the SX3000 gives you more published system flow, a built-in timer and a much lower purchase price.
If your main priority is maximum value and circulation for a very large Intex-style above-ground pool, the SX3000 deserves serious consideration.
Hayward ProSeries vs XStream: Sand or Cartridge?
This comparison matters because both are higher-end Hayward filtration systems, but the ownership experience is completely different.
The ProSeries gives you an 18-inch tank containing 150 lb of sand.
The Hayward XStream uses a large 150 sq ft cartridge instead.
With the ProSeries, routine filter cleaning is handled by backwashing and rinsing through the multiport valve.
With the XStream, there is no backwashing. You shut the system down, open the filter and physically remove the cartridge for cleaning.
Neither approach is automatically better.
If you dislike lifting and washing cartridges, the ProSeries has a clear advantage.
If you don't want to discharge pool water during backwashing and prefer cartridge filtration, the XStream is the more logical Hayward route.

The 150 lb Sand Bed Is One of the Main Reasons to Buy It
This is where the ProSeries feels substantially different from the compact Intex systems.
The S180T takes 150 lb of filter sand. Hayward specifies media in the 0.45–0.55 mm range for the 18-inch tank.
That doesn't mean the Hayward automatically filters to a finer micron level than every smaller sand filter.
We wouldn't make that claim.
What you do get is a much larger media bed than something like the SX2800's 77 lb tank.
That helps explain why the ProSeries is physically larger and why changing all the sand is a more substantial job when the time eventually comes.
Use proper pool filter sand rather than play sand or general-purpose building sand.

The 7-Position Vari-Flo Valve Gives You More Control
The top-mounted Vari-Flo valve gives you seven positions:
Filter — normal filtration
Backwash — reverses water through the sand to clean it
Rinse — settles the media and clears dirty water after backwashing
Waste — sends water directly out without filtering
Recirculate — bypasses the sand bed while circulating water
Closed — shuts flow through the valve
Winter — leaves the valve positioned for winter drainage/storage
Hayward's own operating instructions use these valve functions and specifically tell owners to turn the pump off before changing valve position.
The Winter position is a small difference from the six-position layout on the current Intex filters and makes the ProSeries particularly straightforward when you're shutting the system down for the off-season.
What Is This Hayward Sand Filter Like to Maintain?
The maintenance routine is one of the strongest reasons to choose it.
When the filter is newly cleaned and running normally, note the pressure-gauge reading.
That number becomes your clean-pressure baseline.
Hayward says to backwash when pressure rises 8–10 PSI above that starting pressure.
That's important because it means:
20 PSI isn't automatically dirty.
One pool might normally operate at 8 PSI and another at 14 PSI depending on the plumbing and equipment.
What matters is the increase over your own clean reading.

When it is time to clean the filter, Hayward's routine is:
Switch the pump off.
Move the valve to Backwash.
Run until the water in the sight glass clears.
Switch the pump off again.
Move to Rinse.
Run for roughly 30–60 seconds.
Switch back to Filter.
Hayward specifically recommends watching the pressure increase rather than backwashing on an arbitrary weekly schedule.
That's the maintenance advice we'd follow.
The 1 HP PowerFlo Matrix Pump Is Part of What You're Paying For
The W3S180T92S isn't just an 18-inch filter tank.
Hayward pairs it with its 1 HP PowerFlo Matrix above-ground pool pump, along with the equipment base and connecting hose package. Hayward's current product schedule confirms that exact pairing.
That gives you a matched filter-and-pump package rather than sourcing the two separately.
One thing it doesn't give you is the built-in automatic timer we get on the current Intex SX1500, SX2800 and SX3000.
For some owners, that won't matter because the pump is already controlled by an external timer or automation.
But if you're coming from an Intex system and like setting the filtration hours directly on the pump, it is a convenience you'll lose unless you add separate control.
Don't Ignore the 1.5-Inch Plumbing
The current ProSeries system comes with a 1.5-inch hose package.
That's appropriate for the larger above-ground pools we'd pair it with, but check what is actually fitted to your pool before ordering.
If you're upgrading from a small seasonal pool using 1.25-inch hoses, don't assume the ProSeries is going to be the same kind of plug-and-play swap as replacing one compact Intex pump with another.
The system works best when the surrounding plumbing is appropriate for it.
And this matters to flow.
The 35 GPM number we've discussed is only useful if the plumbing isn't creating unnecessary restriction.
So on this particular filter, installation quality and plumbing matter just as much as the horsepower printed on the pump.
Winterizing Is One of the ProSeries' Better Practical Features
If the filter will sit outdoors through a freezing winter, proper drainage matters.
The ProSeries includes a large sand/water drain, and its Vari-Flo valve has a Winter position designed to leave the valve open internally for drainage. Hayward's instructions tell owners to completely drain the tank, leave the drain cap off and place the valve between positions/in the inactive winter arrangement during shutdown.
For anyone who closes their pool for winter, that's a genuinely useful feature.
It's one of the practical reasons this system feels designed as a long-term piece of pool equipment rather than a compact seasonal filter.

We'd look hardest at this model if you have a larger above-ground pool, particularly around 18–21 ft round, and want a more substantial sand-filter system than the compact Intex alternatives.
It makes particular sense if:
you prefer backwashing to cartridge cleaning;
you want a large 150 lb filter bed;
you like the Hayward PowerFlo Matrix platform;
and you're happy to pay more for a heavier-duty filter/pump combination.
The ProSeries also makes sense for an owner who intends to keep the filtration equipment for the long term rather than treating the pump as a seasonal accessory.
Who Should Skip It?
We'd skip it for a small 12–15 ft pool unless there were unusual filtration demands.
There's simply no strong reason to spend this much or maintain 150 lb of filter media when a smaller system can comfortably handle the water volume.
We'd also look carefully at alternatives if you're around 24 ft or above.
The 18-inch ProSeries can fall within the numbers at around 12,000 gallons, but you're then getting close to our six-hour design-flow ceiling and actual installed flow may be lower than 35 GPM.
And if your real reason for considering Hayward is simply that you want a premium filtration system, don't assume it has to be sand.
The XStream gives you the cartridge route without dropping back to a compact Intex-style pump.

The Hayward ProSeries W3S180T92S is a very good sand-filter system, but its biggest strength isn't raw flow — it's the size and substance of the filtration package.
The 18-inch tank holds 150 lb of sand, the included PowerFlo Matrix gives you a proper matched 1 HP pump, and the Vari-Flo valve makes routine cleaning and winterizing straightforward.
But the 35 GPM rating needs to be understood correctly.
It is the filter's design-flow rating, not a guaranteed installed system-flow number.
That distinction is why we're much more comfortable positioning the ProSeries around larger 18–21 ft above-ground pools instead of stretching it toward very high pool volumes where real-world flow may fall below the filter's 35 GPM design rating.
The other important point is value.
The Intex SX2800 operates in a broadly similar flow class and costs considerably less, while also including a built-in timer.
So why buy the Hayward?
Because you want the 18-inch filter, 150 lb sand bed, PowerFlo Matrix pump, Hayward serviceability and more substantial filtration platform — not simply because the brand name or horsepower sounds bigger.
