Preventing algae in your above-ground pool requires proper water chemistry, circulation, and maintenance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to keeping your pool algae-free:

1. Maintain Proper Water Chemistry (Test 2-3 times per week)

✅ Chlorine: 1 - 3 ppm (keeps algae from growing)

pH: 7.2 - 7.6 (prevents algae-friendly conditions)

Total Alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm (helps stabilize pH)

Cyanuric Acid (CYA): 30 - 50 ppm (protects chlorine from the sun)

Tip: If chlorine drops below 1 ppm, algae can start growing quickly!

2. Run Your Pump & Filter Daily

  • Run your pump for at least 8-12 hours per day to prevent stagnant water.

  • Make sure your filter is properly sized and cleaned regularly (backwash sand filters, rinse cartridges).

  • Algae thrives in still water—good circulation prevents buildup in corners and dead spots.

3. Brush & Vacuum Weekly

  • Brush walls, ladders, and corners where algae can cling.

  • Vacuum to remove debris and prevent algae spores from settling.

  • Use a robotic pool cleaner for easier maintenance.

4. Shock Your Pool Weekly (or As Needed)

  • Shock treatment eliminates bacteria, algae, and organic contaminants.

  • Use calcium hypochlorite (Cal-Hypo) or non-chlorine shock based on your pool type.

  • When to shock:

    • Once a week as prevention.

    • After heavy rain (dilutes chlorine).

    • After high bather loads (body oils, sunscreen feed algae).

    • If chlorine levels drop below 1 ppm.

5. Use an Algaecide & Phosphate Remover (Optional but effective)

  • Algaecides help prevent algae growth but shouldn’t replace chlorine.

  • Phosphate removers eliminate food sources for algae, reducing growth potential.

6. Keep Debris Out of the Pool

  • Leaves, dirt, and organic matter can introduce algae spores.

  • Use a pool cover when not in use to prevent debris from getting in.

  • Skim daily to remove floating debris before it sinks.

7. Regularly Clean & Maintain Your Filter

  • Sand filters: Backwash every 1-2 weeks.

  • Cartridge filters: Clean every 2-4 weeks (replace every 1-2 years).

  • DE filters: Backwash and recharge DE powder as needed.

Final Tip: Stay Consistent!

Skipping maintenance for even a few days can allow algae to take hold. A consistent routine is the best way to keep your above-ground pool crystal clear!
