A garden hose will do the basic job. The problem is getting water properly between all those pleats without spending ages rotating the cartridge and repeatedly adjusting the nozzle.
That's where a dedicated pool filter cartridge cleaner such as the Aquatix Pro comes in.
It connects to a hose and uses six targeted water jets to work across several pleats at once, with an on/off button and adjustable water flow built into the handle.
So the real question isn't whether you need one.
You don't.
The question is whether it makes a job you're already doing regularly quick and convenient enough to justify buying a dedicated tool for it.

How Does the Aquatix Pro Cartridge Cleaner Work?
The Aquatix Pro screws onto your hose much like a conventional hose nozzle.

Aquatix Pro designed the head specifically around pleated cartridge media. The manufacturer says its six spray nozzles can tackle multiple pleats together, while the regulator lets you increase or decrease the water flow without returning to the faucet.
That doesn't make the cleaning process automatic.
You still have to work your way around the complete cartridge and pay attention to areas where debris is trapped deeply between the pleats.
What it does is give you better control over where the hose water is going.
Is a Pool Cartridge Filter Cleaner Better Than a Garden Hose?
The Aquatix Pro is a dedicated pool cartridge filter cleaner, but that doesn't mean you need one to maintain a cartridge properly.
A normal garden hose is enough to clean a pool filter cartridge.

Does It Work With Intex Type A and Type B Cartridges?
Aquatix Pro isn't made specifically for Intex filters.
It's a general cartridge-cleaning tool intended for standard pleated pool and spa filters.
That makes it relevant to both of the main Intex replacement cartridges we've been covering.
The smaller Intex Type A is used by systems such as the C1000 and C1500, while the larger Type B is used by the C2500 and compatible 2500 GPH systems.
The cleaning principle is the same with either one: rinse accumulated debris from between the pleats without damaging the filter media.

How We'd Use the Aquatix Pro
Start by switching off the filter pump and removing the cartridge according to your filter manufacturer's instructions.
Stand the cartridge somewhere you can comfortably rotate it.
Connect the Aquatix Pro to the hose and begin with a moderate water flow rather than immediately turning it up as far as possible.
Work from the top of the cartridge downward, moving the cleaning head slowly around the pleats. Pay particular attention to sections where debris remains trapped deeper inside.
Rotate the cartridge and continue until you've cleaned the complete circumference.
We'd then turn the cartridge over and give the opposite end the same attention.
The aim isn't simply to make the outside look white again.
You want water to reach between the pleats where dirt and fine debris accumulate.
Don't Force the Cleaning Head Into the Pleats
This is one area where we'd be a little more careful than some of the marketing language suggests.
Aquatix Pro describes the tool as designed to clean cartridge media without damaging it.
That doesn't mean you should aggressively force the cleaning head into soft filter material.
Use the water jets to do the cleaning.
The head can be brought close enough to direct water into the pleats, but we wouldn't use it like a stiff scrubbing brush or wedge it hard between them.
The same applies to water pressure.
More pressure isn't automatically better if it starts distorting or damaging the filter media.
A controlled rinse is what you're after.
Can It Make an Old Cartridge Like New Again?
No cartridge-cleaning tool can reverse physical wear.
If a cartridge is simply covered in dirt, pollen or other loose debris, thorough rinsing can make a dramatic difference.
But it can't repair:
torn pleats,
damaged end caps,
collapsed media,
or filter material that remains permanently clogged after cleaning.

Could Regular Cleaning Help Your Cartridge Last Longer?
Potentially.

Regular cleaning can also help you avoid replacing a cartridge simply because it looks dirty. If the pleats are still intact and normal flow returns after a thorough rinse, the cartridge may still have plenty of useful life left.
That benefit comes from proper cartridge maintenance, though - not specifically from owning an Aquatix Pro.

Who Should Skip It?
If you have one small cartridge, clean it occasionally and already find the job quick with your garden hose, I'd keep your money.
There's no reason to turn a straightforward job into an equipment purchase just because a specialist tool exists.
We'd also skip it if you're expecting the Aquatix Pro to rescue cartridges that are already torn, distorted or permanently clogged.

We like the Aquatix Pro as a pool filter cartridge cleaner, but we'd buy it for convenience rather than because cartridge filters require a specialist cleaning tool.
The six-jet head, flow regulator and start/stop control are genuinely useful features for directing water between filter pleats. Aquatix Pro also backs the cleaner with a one-year warranty.
For someone running a cartridge filter throughout the pool season and cleaning it frequently, the price is reasonable enough that we can see the appeal.
For someone with a small cartridge that already rinses clean in a few minutes with a hose, we'd probably skip it.
Our recommendation: Worth considering if cartridge cleaning is a regular chore. Nice to have rather than essential.
