To keep your above-ground pool water clean and safe, you should test and balance the water regularly. Here's a general guideline:

Testing Frequency:

  • Chlorine & pH: At least 2-3 times per week

  • Total Alkalinity & Calcium Hardness: Once a week

  • Cyanuric Acid (CYA) & Other Chemicals: Once a month or after heavy rain/drainage

Ideal Water Chemistry Levels:

Parameter

Ideal Range

pH

7.2 - 7.6

Chlorine (Free Available)

1 - 3 ppm

Total Alkalinity (TA)

80 - 120 ppm

Calcium Hardness

200 - 400 ppm

Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer)

30 - 50 ppm

Balancing Tips:

  • Low pH? Add sodium carbonate (soda ash)

  • High pH? Add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate

  • Low chlorine? Add liquid chlorine, tablets, or shock treatment

  • High chlorine? Let it dissipate naturally or use a neutralizer

  • Cloudy water? Check pH, chlorine, and use a clarifier if needed

Regular testing helps prevent algae growth, cloudy water, and equipment damage. Would you like recommendations on the best testing kits?
