How do I clean my above-ground pool?

Keeping your above-ground pool clean is essential for clear, safe water. Here’s a step-by-step cleaning routine to follow:

1. Skim the Surface Daily

  • Use a pool skimmer net to remove leaves, bugs, and debris.

  • Do this at least once a day to prevent debris from sinking.

2. Brush the Pool Walls & Floor (2-3 times per week)

  • Use a pool brush to scrub the walls, floor, and ladder to remove algae and dirt.

  • For vinyl pools: Use a soft-bristle brush to avoid damage.

  • For metal or concrete pools: A stiff brush works best.

3. Vacuum the Pool Weekly

  • Use a manual vacuum or automatic pool cleaner to remove dirt and debris from the bottom.

  • For small pools, a garden hose vacuum can work well.

  • For large pools, a robotic cleaner saves time.

4. Clean & Maintain the Filter (Weekly or As Needed)

Your filter removes fine debris and keeps water clear:

  • Sand Filters: Backwash when the pressure increases by 8-10 psi.

  • Cartridge Filters: Rinse with a hose every 2-4 weeks, replace every 1-2 years.

  • DE Filters: Backwash and add fresh DE powder as needed.

5. Test & Balance Water (2-3 times per week)

  • pH: 7.2 - 7.6

  • Chlorine: 1 - 3 ppm

  • Total Alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 200 - 400 ppm

Adjust as needed to keep water balanced and prevent algae or cloudiness.

6. Shock the Pool Weekly (Or After Heavy Use/Rain)

  • Use pool shock to remove contaminants and prevent algae growth.

  • Dissolve shock in a bucket of water first, then pour it around the pool.

  • Run the pump for at least 8 hours after shocking.

7. Use a Pool Cover When Not in Use

  • Prevents debris, bugs, and algae growth.

  • Saves money on chemicals and reduces cleaning time.

8. Deep Clean As Needed

  • If the water is cloudy: Check the filter, balance chemicals, and use a clarifier.

  • If algae appears: Brush, shock, and use an algaecide.

  • If the liner gets slippery: Brush and increase chlorine levels.

Bonus Tip: Keep a Cleaning Schedule!

Daily: Skim debris.

2-3x Weekly: Brush walls, test water.

Weekly: Vacuum, shock, clean filter.

Monthly: Deep clean & check equipment.

Following this routine will keep your above-ground pool sparkling clean all season!
